There is a common thread between charity and sports, and as far as sports go, golf would have to be right up there as a major contributor to various good causes. You may have heard that October is breast cancer awareness month. This a great opportunity to raise awareness and money to save lives. Now that’s something we can all put some effort into right? Right!
So the corporate folks over at Masterfoods have released Pink M & M’s to support the cause and just in time for Halloween no less. You buy a bag of 14 oz. M & M’s and 35 cents goes to The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation. Splurge on the 21 oz. bag and the bounty goes up to 50 cents.
Now we all know what women mean to all of us, and among those that love women are little kids. And little kids like candy right? And little kids will be collecting candy and dolling it out in just a few short days for Halloween right? Right! So go out to to one of those big box warehouse stores where you buy in Army/Navy quantity and buy some pink M & M’s!
In the mean time, if you’re a blogger then go ahead and put up a post about this before you run down to the store. Carl Chapman, a blogger I just became acquainted with from another blogger friend of mine has gone on a blog strike until 25 other bloggers put up a post about this. If it counts, this will go up on all our blogs, however meager their traffic, because dammit, it’s the thought that counts.
Thanks to Carl and Ami I’ll be making pink M & M’s my sole distribution for Halloween this year.

Tom Lehman
I am American and I would have loved the U.S. to win, but I’m happy we didn’t for the fans and people of Ireland and for Darren Clarke and his Irish golfing Mates, Paul McGinley and Padraig Harrington, who later admitted how sad he would have been to have lost the Cup at home (this was the first time in Ryder Cup history that the event has been held in Ireland).

Ryder Cup 2006 - County Kildare - The K Club
Probably like most of you, I have too little time and too many commitments but all the desire in the world to sit in front of the T.V and do NOTHING but watch hours of Ryder Cup coverage. Alas, I’ll record it all on the DVR until I can watch every last minute in detail today and later tonight - all the time avoiding current news coverage in an attempt to keep the tourney fresh and unspoiled. I hardly have time to blog but Tiger’s tee shot (the second overall stroke of play for the U.S.) on the first hole landed in the water to my unhappy exclamation, That’s Wet! Jim Furyk looks solid though and none of the U.S. fans are too worried yet (are we?).
The best moment though was watching Darren Clarke walk on the first tee to the rousing ovation of his local fans. He proceeded to stripe a scorched drive down the left side of the fairway - nothing but power, emotion, and beauty. Lee Westwood just looked on in awe - as we all did. The Spaniards (Olazabal and Garcia) meanwhile, a team that would put some fear in ANY U.S. opponent, look like they’re going to be just as tough as you would expect them to be.
Man, there’s so much too say and so little time. For now though I’ll just have to leave it at this for a start.
Play well Gentlemen!

The rules of Golf don’t have to be a tired, incomprehensible, worn out bore. Do they? Photo Credit: idiot king (click on the photo to see more of idiot king’s photos on Flickr)
In an effort, once and for all, to understand the rules of the game, I’m launching a new feature called, That’s my ruling. The point here is for me to learn the rules by writing on them, hopefully with a few twists of irony, humor, and real world Golf thrown in. If you just so happen to learn something as well, we’ll call it even.
I’ve decided to launch this column with a rule that I’ve broken so many times I couldn’t ever possibly add up all the two stroke penalties.
Rule: Asking for advice on club selection
You’re on the tee and you know that there’s no chance you’re actually going to make contact with the ball. Rather than worry about this you concern yourself with what exact club, with some divine intervention, might actually reach the green if you were to actually hit the ball solidly. After all, this could be the one time during your round where you do! You adjust your cap, remove the wedgie from your pants that the Golf cart so rudely bestowed upon you on the previous hole, and turn to your Golf partner. “What are you hitting?”you ask them. “5 iron,” they reply proudly.
The rule simply explained: Rule 8-1. Don’t ask your playing partners for advice on what club to hit. If you do - you’ll be penalized two strokes in stroke play and in match play you’ll lose the hole.
That’s my Ruling: Ouch! Really, why do we ask this? How often does the player we ask have anything in common with your game? Have you ever found yourself asking this question of a six-foot-four, 5 handicapper, because naturally, your 6 foot, 20 handicap swing will produce the same yardage? Brilliant! You are allowed to ask about public information that if you weren’t such an unobservant lazy bugger, you would go get yourself, like the yardage from the sprinkler head. You are allowed to ask your caddy, or four ball partner without penalty. If you have a caddy, you’re probably rich and know better than most that rules aren’t meant for you any more than cleaning your own house mansion. If you have a four ball partner, you better hope they know the rules better than you do. In either event, stop this inane chit chat, close your yapper, and think about something more productive, like sex.

Tiger Woods at the 2006 Deutsche Bank Championship

Tiger Woods wins 5th in a row - 7 for the 2006 Season
These are the sounds and colors of Tiger Woods as he systematically dismantled the Tournament Players Club of Boston and Vijay Singh’s three shot lead at the 2006 Deutsche Bank Championship. It was another awesome display as the dominant Tiger of 2000 re-emerged with his swing on its new plane, his tempo dialed in, and his command on his golf kingdom most secure. I know Tiger has been winning all year. My point is that it’s getting ‘automatic’ again. We expect him to win every time out and that’s what makes it like 2000 all over again. I agree with Paul Azinger - I just never get tired of watching Tiger when he plays like this and we are truly fortunate to be watching him on his quest to unseat Jack Nicklaus as the greatest golfer of all time.
What was Vijay Singh to do?
Well, if you do the math I guess he could have shot a 65 to hold on for a one stroke win. Given that he shot a 61 on the same course on Sunday (round 3) that wouldn’t seem too tall an order. Then again, with how Tiger Woods is playing you would have to wonder if Tiger would have simply shot an even better round to win it?
My only question now is whether Tiger Woods will bring his ‘A Game’ to the 2006 Ryder Cup at the K Club in Straffan, County Kildare, Ireland. Let’s hope so.

I was reading Scott Walker’s “Notes From The Bunker” the other day over at DigitalGolf and it was hard to keep a dry eye as I read his story about Woodrow Wojdula, a boy recovering from a rare form of cancer who recently had a wish come true (one of these) by meeting Phil Mickelson. You’ll likely be surprised by the punchline and I’ll leave to you to link over to Scott for the full story. Thanks for letting us know about this story Scott - it’s a wonderful reminder of the power of the human spirit.

Tiger Woods wins again
August 27, 2006
Tiger Woods just sank his birdie putt on the 17th hole in a playoff to beat Stewart Cink at the World Golf Championship at Firestone Country Club in Akron Ohio.
Tiger gave Stewart a chance to win with a par putt on the previous hole on 18 and Stewart JUST missed it. Of course, Tiger Woods doesn’t give his competitors too many chances to beat him and with a sudden squall of rain pouring down on him on the 17th fairway he stuck a fantastic approach shot to just outside of 8 feet. Tiger didn’t miss his birdie putt this time and then we saw what makes Tiger the great competitor that he is. His expression of pure joy. Surely, after all those wins and all those majors, a WGC win, even with its added prestige, wouldn’t be that big a deal! Maybe it wouldn’t be for us if we were to play with his skill, but Tiger Woods just loves to win more than most people. It’s that drive that compels him to grind out amazing pars and dazzle us with amazing sand saves and miraculous shots from the trees. In golf, and perhaps in all competitive sports, no one has as much of that ’stuff’ as Tiger. Wow.

I want to share my issue with “balls.”
Now, I know that it is juvenile, but as a female golfer - I admit that hearing anyone refer to another golfer as a good “ball striker” sends me into an uncontrolable crying and giggling fit. Even writing that sentence - I am giggling uncontrollably.

Balls
My mother just sent me an email that, sure enough, made me laugh so hard that I cried. I hope you enjoy it as well:
I was at the golf store comparing different kinds of golf balls. I was unhappy with the women’s type I had been using. After browsing for several minutes, I was approached by one of the good-looking gentlemen who works at the store. He asked if he could help me. Without thinking, I looked at him and said, “I think I like playing with men’s balls.”

We selected this photo as our picture of the week on thatswet because it’s a great example of a youngster that’s inspired by golf. ‘V’ had a bad fall in Kingergargen and has just now back to swinging his clubs. Looks like he’s in top form! Great job ‘V’!
Check out our story from earlier today on getting kids involved with Golf.
