Ernie is still my pick to go all the way at Hoylake
With Tigger going into Day Three of The Open Championship in the lead and playing fantastic golf it’s absoultely absurd to stay with my pick that Ernie Els is going to win the Open. But I am. Ernie’s quote from his post round Day Two interview.
“I wasn’t going to back down today.”
There’s a resolve in Ernie that you can intuitively sense. Of course, I think Tigger has the same kind of resolve after his showing at the U.S. Open but I think the Golf gods know that Ernie is due. I was delighted to see Ernie draw within a stroke of Tiger yesterday and I can’t wait to watch them play today. I love a Tigger/Phil combo as much as the next guy but there’s a solidness that Ernie has that I’ve never gotten from Phil. Let’s tee it up gentlemen!

I agree that Els generally has been a more solid player than Phil Mickelson (see 3 majors vs. 2), but Els has also had some big blowups in big shots. Those have seemed to appear for no apparent reason.
Check out more on this topic at Will Ernie Els Wilt?.
Cheers,
Scott

I clearly did not get enough sleep last night. Of course Els and Mickelson are tied at 3.
