Phil still sore - says ‘No!’ to Treetops and ‘Yes!’ to Twinkies

Another Twinkie Phil?
Another Twinkie Phil?

Phil Mickelson pulled out of Rick Smith’s Treetops Par-3 Tournament this weekend after a few nights too many this week curled up in front of his 80 foot plasma screen watching X-Files re-runs and eating Twinkies. Can you blame him? I certainly wouldn’t! I haven’t been able to write about Golf since Monday and it’s all Phil’s fault.

The Tivo’d last round of the 106th U.S. Open is still waiting for me to fire it up and watch those last three terrible holes. As the week has gone by I’ve learned a little more about Phil’s collapse. Sounds like I pretty much had it figured right in the story I wrote before I had seen the details of how he shit a brick at the last.

Oh well - it’s just a game right?

And what about the other players from the 106th U.S. Open?

What about David Duval finishing in 16th, just six strokes back! That’s some great news. We all hope to see him back on top and I’m almost beginning to think that he may just return. If David does show, will he be even better this time around?

What about the international flavor of the leaderboard? In the Top 20 only six Americans. Three Aussie’s (that’s pronounced Ozzie - not Ossie) were represented in the top 20 and one (Adam Scott) was just outside the Top 20 in 21st place. Lean mean Geoff Ogilvy and Mather took the big prize and let’s not forget that he earned it. He isn’t exactly the first guy to win by NOT choking on the last few holes of a major. Geoff’s a classic U.S. Open Champion and he’ll likely win more. Being a perennial Aussie he’ll probably use his ability to play in the wind to win an Open to boot (you know, THE Open).

Here’s to Stricker not completely loosing his cool and dropping to dead last like the media thought he would (he posted right alongside Vijay and some other Golf studs in 6th place).

Here’s to Kenneth Ferrie making a name for himself overnight in America. What’s with the British invasion lately?

Here’s to Ryuji Imata coming in 12th. Who is Ryuji you say? Hell, I don’t know. Fuck it.

When is Ernie’s knee going to be better? He still has one of my top 5 all-time swings. When I’m on the tee I try to think of Ernie. No, not in a Brokeback Mountain kind of way (not that there’s anything wrong with that) but in an ‘I want to butter smooth tempo like Ernie mind warping’ kind of way. And when I get that swing thought I can actually make contact with the ball (well sometimes at least).

And what about our ponied Angel - Miguel Himfenez (that’s Jimenez)? Well he took it all in stride and lit it up - the cigar that is, not the course.

Miguel lights it up
Miguel lights it up — well done!
